The Highlands are known for their awe inspiring beauty and despite being vast in terms of land mass, the Highlands is sparsely populated. The Highlands are home to the Cairngorms National Park, Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides and for those who believe the Loch Ness Monster! The capital city of the Highlands is Inverness. The other main towns in the Highlands are Ullapool, Aviemore, Fort William, Thurso and Wick in the very north.
Morayshire - Speyside
Speyside in Scotland is known for its beautiful valleys and wildlife. It is perhaps better known though for its association with the Scottish tradition of producing whisky. Speyside is rich in distilleries and is home to the Scottish Whisky trail of 9 distilleries in total. Most distilleries offer fascinating tours where you have the opportunity to learn about how whisky is made but more importantly you usually get to sample the final product.
Speyside is also dotted with some little villages and towns worth a visit. Tomintoul in particular is known as the highest village in the Highlands and Fochabers is worth a visit.
